Eelam Tamils protest outside United Nations

During the 51st session of the UN Human Rights Council session, a large crowd of Eelam Tamils engaged in a peaceful demonstration and commemorated the 35th anniversary of   Lt Col. Thileepan’s hunger strike to death.

The protest comes as the UN Human Rights Council session is debating the wording of a 6-page resolution that details continued human rights concerns over Sri Lanka and highlights the lack of tangible progress.

The anniversary of Thileepan’s sacrifice began on September 15th to mark the first day of his hunger strike in 1987. Thileepan called on India to meet their commitment to Tamils on the island and the demilitarisation of the North-East.

This year 12 Tamil political prisoners, held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, are also partaking in a hunger strike in Colombo's Magazine prison as they continue to demand their release.
