Tamil Christians across the North-East marked Easter Sunday, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ through midnight Masses, prayer services, and community gatherings in churches across the homeland.
Easter, which honours the belief in the resurrection of Jesus Christ following his crucifixion, remains one of the most significant events in the Christian calendar. Despite ongoing challenges faced by Tamils on the island, churches were filled with worshippers.
In Mannar, large crowds gathered at churches throughout the district on Saturday night to take part in Easter vigil services. Midnight Mass was held in multiple parishes, with heightened security measures observed around places of worship.
At St. Sebastian’s Cathedral in Mannar, the main Easter vigil Mass commenced at 11:15pm on Saturday, drawing thousands of devotees. The service was led by the Bishop of Mannar, Rt. Rev. Dr. Antonypillai Gnanapragasam, and conducted as a concelebrated Mass with clergy from across the diocese.
Security was visibly strengthened around the cathedral during the service, as worshippers gathered in large numbers to mark the occasion in prayer and reflection.
Across the North-East, similar scenes unfolded, with churches illuminated and filled with congregants attending midnight services and Easter Sunday prayers.
