Expressing disappointment over the current text of the draft UNHRC resolution on Sri Lanka, the TNA Spokesperson Suresh Premachandran said it did 'nothing constructive towards addressing the genuine grievances towards the Tamils affected by war'.
Speaking in an interview to Ceylon Today, Premachandran said,
"Canada, Britain and the US had earlier vehemently condemned the human rights violations in Sri Lanka and had also called for an international investigation into the alleged war crimes in the Island. But the US draft resolution had failed to mention anything on the International investigation into the alleged war crimes,"
He was reported to have also criticised the failure of the draft resolution to outline an internationally mediated dialogue on preventing the Sri Lankan state's land grab in the North.
In a joint letter to the UNHRC published earlier this week, together with the Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Northern Provincial Council leader CV Wigneswaran, and the TNA leader R. Sampanthan called for an international Commission of Inquiry.
They wrote,
"We, concerned individuals and organisations from around the world, urge the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to use their March 2014 session to pass a resolution that will include a commitment to an independent international investigation in the form of a commission of inquiry in Sri Lanka. Only this will help put the country on the path to justice and reconciliation"
