Draft resolution 'deeply dismaying' - TNPF

The draft UNHRC resolution on Sri Lanka, tabled at the Council last Monday, was "deeply dismaying", said the Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) in a statement released yesterday.

Criticising the resolution's failure to ensure a meaningful international inquiry, immediate relief from the on-going oppression faced by the Tamil people, and a meaningful political solution to the ethnic conflict, the TNPF called on fellow Tamils in the diaspora and on Tamils in Tamil Nadu, to work towards pushing for a stronger resolution.

Stressing that the resolution should call for an independent, international investigation into the crime of genocide against Tamils in Sri Lanka, the TNPF said,

"We urge that the resolution led by US with the support of other western countries at the UNHRC, foregrounds the calls of the Tamil people, and bring a permanent end to human rights abuses, violations, and genocide inflicted on the Tamil people by the Sri Lankan state."

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
