DMK demands international probe and referendum on self-determination

The leader of the DMK, the largest opposition party in Tamil Nadu, described the draft UNHRC resolution on Sri Lanka “disappointing” and called on India to propose a separate resolution, calling for an independent international investigation.

"The draft placed before the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is overall disappointing," the party chief M Karunanidhi said in a statement.

The resolution did not mention “Tamil genocide”, Karunanidhi said, adding that many of the “finer details” in UN human rights chief navi Pillay’s report were omitted.

The draft had also given Colombo one more year to show results on accountability and the "self-conscious international community will not accept that this is fair".

"Therefore, as already demanded by (DMK backed) TESO, India should move a separate resolution seeking credible independent probe against human rights violations, and a UN-monitored referendum for Tamils' self-determination," he said.
