'Deeply saddened by the scenes at Jaffna University' says Lord Ahmad

The UK Minister of State for South Asia and Human Rights, Lord Tariq Ahmad of Wimbledon, admonished the recent destruction of the Mullivaikkal memorial today.

Ahmad tweeted:

Lord Ahmad has previously spoken on the political situation in Sri Lanka, highlighting its human rights issue, including the “harassment of civil society, continued militarization of civilian functions, and the government's withdrawal of support for the UN Human Rights Council resolution on post-conflict truth, accountability and reconciliation," maintaining the UK's prioritization of the island.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
