Covid response sees army deployed in Colombo

Heavily armed security teams have been deployed in Sampithpura and Mattakkuliya in Colombo under the order of accused war criminal and army head, Shavendra Silva. The measure was taken on the grounds of enforcing safety precautions during the coronavirus pandemic.

The intense army presence has been deployed to Lankapura (North Central province), Bloemendal (Colombo), and East and West Kotahena (Colombo).

In March this year, the first recorded case of COVID-19 transmission spurred the president’s militarised regime into action. Concerns have been raised about Sri Lanka’s military-led response to the global pandemic. The president’s decision to appoint Shavendra Silva as the figurehead of the pandemic response thas also drawn widespread criticism from rights groups and civil society.
