City University rounds off Breaking the Silence

City University hosted the Breaking the Silence earlier this month, completing the awareness campaign circulating across British universities.

Following on from other British universities, students at City University displayed an array of posters and artwork, many created by the students themselves.

The exhibition attracted a large crowd, with many students keen to find out more about the genocide of Tamils. The event also saw speeches from members of the committee followed by a candle lit vigil, in memory of all the lives lost.

A particular highlight of the event was the wide participation of students laying down their handprints in support of the campaign, and writing down their thoughts after seeing the exhibition.

The event at City University was the final event as part of this year’s ‘Breaking the Silence’ campaign, a university led genocide awareness campaign held with the Tamil Youth Organisation UK.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
