City University London held an exhibition day Monday, displaying posters, banners and leaflets to raise awareness of the ongoing genocide of the Tamil people.
Held on the 28th of November, the exhibition took place on the busy corridor running through Northampton Square and attracted the attention of many of the students and lecturers who passed by.
Over one hundred students stopped to sign a petition calling for an international independent investigation into war crimes in Sri Lanka and were shocked to learn about the atrocities that took place on the island.
A remembrance evening followed the exhibition, where more than 60 students gathered to listen to presentations on the history of the Tamil people and of the war. Candles were then lit and a moment of silence observed to pay respects to all those that died during the conflict.
Organisers told the Tamil Guardian,
“We ran this event to give a voice to those who have lost theirs in the struggle, and to remind people that although the war may be over, justice is yet to be served.”City University Tamil Society worked in collaboration with seven other London university Tamil societies to launch “Breaking the Silence”, a fortnight of awareness days, held across campuses in London.
