Canadian prime minister praises positive contributions of the Tamil community

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised the Tamil community in a statement relased to mark Tamil New Year today.

“Today is New Year’s Day in the Tamil calendar, a day that will be celebrated in Canada and around the world,” said the prime minister. “Puthandu, also known as Varusha Pirappu, is a time for family and friends to feast, to exchange gifts, and to pray for blessings for the year to come at temples and churches.”

“As Tamils welcome the New Year, we are reminded of the many positive contributions that this community makes to our country,” he added. “Canada is strong because of the many diverse and vibrant cultures that come together to form the base of its identity.”

“On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I wish all Tamils who celebrate Puthandu a happy and prosperous New Year.”
