British Tamils protest through London on Sri Lanka's Independence Day

Thousands of British Tamils marched through London today in protest against Sri Lanka's 77th Independence Day.

Whilst Sri Lanka celebrates its independence from British rule, the Tamil nation deems it a "black day" as it marks the beginning of state led violence and oppression of the Tamil community.

The protest began outside Sri Lanka's High Commission before thousands of Tamils marched through the capital eventually reaching Downing Street.

The protesters waved Tamil Eelam flags and held placards calling for the right to self-determination and justice and accountability for the Tamil genocide.

The demonstration mirrored similar protests that took place in the North-East today.
