Annai Poopathy remembered on 29th anniversary of death

Today Tamils remembered the anniversary of Annai Poopathy’s death.

Poopathy Kanapathipillai, better known by the endearment Annai Poopathy ("mother Poopathy"), began a fast unto death on 19th March 1988 in protest against the atrocities committed by the Indian Peace Keeping Forces (IPKF).

Annai Poopathy died a month later, on the 19th April 1988.

The leader of the LTTE, Vellupillai Pirapaharan, described her death as symbolising the "uprising of Tamil Eelam motherhood,” and the anniversary of her death was commemorated as ‘patriots remembrance day’.

The 29th anniversary of Annai Poopathy’s death was remembered today across the homeland.

Civil society in Batticaloa, Annai Poopathy’s home district, held a remembrance service at her tomb in Navaladi.

In Kilinochchi, members of the TNA held a memorial service at Arivakam, the party’s district headquarters.

A service was also held by the TNPF in Jaffna.
