Today Tamils remembered the anniversary of Annai Poopathy’s death. |

Poopathy Kanapathipillai, better known by the endearment Annai Poopathy ("mother Poopathy"), began a fast unto death on 19th March 1988 in protest against the atrocities committed by the Indian Peace Keeping Forces (IPKF). |

Annai Poopathy died a month later, on the 19th April 1988. |

The leader of the LTTE, Vellupillai Pirapaharan, described her death as symbolising the "uprising of Tamil Eelam motherhood,” and the anniversary of her death was commemorated as ‘patriots remembrance day’. |
