16th annual British Tamil Sports festival held

On Sunday the 21st August, The British Tamil Sports festival had its 16th sports meet at the Richard Evans Memorial Playing Fields in Putney.

With over 100 teams competing in a wide range of sports, from Cricket and Football to Kabaddi, a large crowd had gathered to enjoy the day’s festivities.

A particular highlight was a competitive Ki'liththaddu tournament taking place, a favourite national Eelam game.

The event began with the raising of the Tamil Eelam flag by former Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian Mr S. Jeyananthamoorthy and British flag by Mr K. Rajamanoharan.

Crowds indulged themselves in the traditional Tamil food on offer, whilst enjoying the British Summer and watching their favourite teams compete for victory, representing both colleges from the Tamil homeland and Tamil associations in the UK.

Members of all ages from the British Tamil community took part in the day’s events, and even the youngest budding athletes had the chance to participate in obstacle courses and sack races.

The winning teams were then awarded trophies in remembrance of those who died during the Eelam nation’s struggle for freedom, the Maveerar Vetri Kinnam (National Heroes Award).
