Venezuelan Government and Opposition hold negotiation

Representatives of both Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro and opposition leader Juan Guaido are holding negotiation in Barbados to resolve the political crisis in Venezuela.

The discussions in Barbados are extension of the first round of negotiations in Oslo in May. Last week both sides had agreed to negotiations and for Norway to act as an impartial mediator.

These negotiations follow a heavy political and economic crisis in Venezuela when in January of this year Guaido declared the 2018 election illegitimate and proclaimed himself president. Guaido has received the support of more than 50 countries including the United States.

Maduro has accused Guaido and his supporters of acting on behalf of US interests and conducting a coup to overthrow his presidency. There have been reported incidents of a crackdown on political dissent.

Venezuela has seen dire food and medical shortages which are exacerbated by US sanctions. Approximately a quarter of Venezuela’s 30 million population are in need of aid reports the UN and close to three million people have left since the start of 2016.

Maduro’s Communication Minister, Jorge Rodriguez, and Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaze represented his government during the negotiation and stated:

“We’re continuing with President Nicholas Maduro’s fundamental approach: a permanent peace dialogue ... to find a constitutional and democratic resolution to the political controversies”

Maduro’s press office put out a further statement stating the aim was to “achieve the change that would end the suffering of Venezuelans”.
