The duo held meetings with the Bishop of Jaffna, Justin Gnanapragasam, Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister CV Wigneswaran and Tamil women form civil society in the North-East.

The chief minister stressed the importance of US commitment to empowering the people of the North, including the Tamil women in the North-East.

At least 80,000 widows are living in the Northern province said Wigneswaran during the meeting, adding that Sri Lanka's government was claiming to reconcile with the North-East by implementing solutions without consulting the Northern Provincial Council.

Ms Russell also met with Tamil women entrepreneurs. Mr Keshap stressed that the participation of women in the ongoing peace process was critical for sustainable peace on the island.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
