Tamil man hospitalised following assault by Sri Lankan military aligned thugs over Mullivaikkal commemoration

Vivekanandan Piriyangan has been hospitalised after being brutally assaulted by thugs with close ties to Sri Lankan military intelligence for organising the commemoration event in Mullivaikkal earlier this week.

The 21 year old who resides in Moonkilaru North, Mullaitivu, has been admitted to Puthukkudiyiruppu Base Hospital after the incident took place yesterday.

On May 18, Tamils gathered in the North-East to mark 13 years since the massacres at Mullivaikkal where tens of thousands of Tamils were killed by Sri Lanka's military.

Sri Lanka has continuously repressed Tamil memorialisation activities in the North-East either by enforcing legal restrictions, harassment and intimidation and even violence by the state's security forces.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
