SLFP supporters parade 'One Country, One Nation' posters in 'Independence Day' rally across Jaffna

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) carried out an 'Independence day' rally attended by SLFP members and supporters in Jaffna, despite the Sri Lankan police pushing for court bans against the justice walk protest organised by Tamils.

The ‘Pottuvil to Polikandi’, which is currently on its course towards Jaffna and has been attended by Tamil and Muslim citizens of the North-East, was opposed by the Sri Lankan police citing COVID-19 concerns.

However, the rally yesterday was carried out with no police pushback and supporters marched through the district with posters reading “One Country, One Nation!”.

Starting from the central square of the city, the rally circled around Jaffna fort, reaching the KKS-Jaffna Road through the A9 highway, and finally arrived at the Jaffna public library.

SLFP General Secretary and MP Dayasiri Jayasekara, took part in the event and lit a candle in front of the Jaffna public library at the end of the march.

Arun, who was a candidate under the Angajan Ramanathan-led SLFP for the August 2020 parliamentary elections, presided over the organisation of this rally.

This rally coincided with the massive North-East wide protest march undertaken by the Tamil people which ran on the declaration that the independence day is a black day (kari naal) and demands human rights and justice for the Tamil and Muslim citizens of Sri Lanka.
