Northern governor’s security remove journalists from Mannar meeting

Local journalists were removed from a district-level meeting about development activities in Mannar by the governor of the Northern Province’s security detail on Sunday.

The meeting involving the governor, the district’s government agent and district, division and village level officials took place at the Mannar District Secretariat.

Journalists were seated in the room to report on the meeting as they ordinarily would, but were forced to leave by Governor Suren Raghavan’s security personnel during the opening remarks.

The journalists criticised the move as an attempt to intimidate the media and block transparency in local decision-making.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
