Canadian Tamil community thriving despite facing genocide in Sri Lanka says Canadian politician

Gurratan Singh, Member of Provincial Parliament for Brampton East, paid tribute to the Tamil community as he marked Tamil Heritage Month.

“When we talk about Brampton, we see we have a vibrant Tamil community. A community that has and continues to face injustices and a genocide at the hands of the Sri Lankan government; a community that has fled persecution, that has come to Canada to start a new life,” Singh said at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario.

“And now they’re thriving with small businesses. They’re thriving with their ability to give back. They’re thriving in Brampton.

The Brampton Tamil Seniors Association is one of the Mose active organisations. And they’re always fundraising for different initiatives, like the hospital. They’re fundraising for different community needs. And this community, this vibrant, strong community now, that is celebrating their language, that is celebrating their culture, that is such a vital part of Brampton.

I’m so proud to have them in our community, and in Canada and in Ontario. They truly are a sign of what makes Canada beautiful.”

In 2016, following a unanimous decision in the House of Commons, a resolution was passed to declare January as Tamil Heritage Month. Since then, January has seen numerous events take place across the country with community leaders and politicians attending and paying tribute to Tamil Canadians.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
