AU calls on UN to set date for Saharawi self-determination referendum

The African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government,  called on the United Nations General Assembly to finalise a date for holding a referendum for self-determination of the Saharawi people in Western Sahara.

Noting concern about the failure to reach a solution to the Western Sahara conflict, the AU summit called for  “a date for the holding of the self-determination referendum for the people of Western Sahara and protect the integrity of Western Sahara as a non-autonomous territory against any act likely to undermine its integrity.”

The AU stressed the importance of “international efforts to facilitate the early resolution of the conflict.”
