A Tamil asylum seeker who was sent back to Sri Lanka in 2013, arrested in Colombo on arrival and subsequently tortured, returned to Switzerland on Monday.
The man was released from a Sri Lankan detention centre a few weeks ago after being incarcerated for over a year and a group of NGOs organised his return to Switzerland, reports Swissinfo.ch.
An inquiry by the Swiss Centre of Expertise in Human Rights and the United Nations Refugee Agency found that the Swiss government’s assessment of the Tamil man’s asylum application had not been adequate enough, consequentially resulting in his immediate detention when deported back to Sri Lanka in 2013.
In May 2014, a further report cited a string of “blunders” that stemmed from “systemic conditions” with the Swiss government that led to the wrong decision being made during the Tamil man’s asylum case.
