The Sri Lankan Army held a sports tournament at the Jaffna Security Force Headquarters in Palali, an army base built on occupied land categorised as a ‘high security zone’, which remains inaccessible to locals and landowners, nine years after the end of the war.
The tournament, or Kabaddi championship, of which the final was held at the headquarter playground on Wednesday, was a concept thought up by the Jaffna commander, Maj. Gen. Dharshana Hettiarachchi “to advance the sportsmanship of Officers / Soldiers, instill esprit-de- corps and to develop their cohesion.”
The owners of the land in Palali, like many of the other ‘high security zones’ across the peninsula remain in displacement camps, almost three decades after their displacement.
