UN Sec-Gen warns Kurdistan referendum could detract from fight against Islamic State

The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, on Sunday, spoke out against the planned Kurdish independence referendum, reports Reuters.

Warning that the referendum would detract from the fight against Islamic State militants, the UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric in a statement, said,

“The Secretary-General respects the sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of Iraq and considers that all outstanding issues between the federal Government and the Kurdistan Regional Government should be resolved through structured dialogue and constructive compromise.”
