TNA will pressure Sri Lankan govt against anti-terror law

The Tamil National Alliance will pressure the Sri Lankan government against passing new anti-terrorism legislation.

The alliance concluded at a meeting of its member parties that since the current government and previous government emphasise that terrorism has been defeated, the proposed counter-terrorism legislation, which allows for extensive human rights violations, would be unnecessary.

The party leaders at the meeting decided that Tamil parties and political leaders would pressure the government in a variety of ways to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act and cancel the proposed counter-terrorism act.

It was also decided that campaigning against antiterrorism legislation should be done in collaboration with Malayaga Tamil parties and Muslim parties.

Sri Lanka's proposed counter-terrorism act has been criticised by other political parties and civil society for the draconian measures it incorporates.
