Sri Lankan navy and air force carry out exercises at Trinco beach

The Sri Lankan navy and air force carried out a series of military exercises at Thiriyai beach in Trincomalee this week, mobilising troops, boats, helicopters and a fighter aircraft.

Several navy vessels, an F7 fighter aircraft and MI 17 helicopters of the Sri Lanka Air Force were involved in the exercise, which saw 159 Sri Lankan navy marines participate. The exercise was named 'Blue Whale III'.

“The prime motive of the exercise was to amplify the operational readiness of the SLN Marines who are competent to ward off any form of threat posed by an enemy both from the sea and land,” reported the official Sri Lankan Navy website, noting that it was "cleverly executed".

Last week the navy carried out a similar exercise on Vaharai beach in Batticaloa.
