The United National Party (UNP) and the Sri Lankan Freedom Party (SLFP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Friday outlining their commitment to a unity government in Sri Lanka till the next election.
Following the swearing in ceremony of Ranil Wickremesinghe as Sri Lanka's prime minister, the UNP general secretary Kabir Hashim and the SLFP's acting general secretary Duminda Dissanayake signed the MoU, which was written entirely in Sinhala. Find it here.
Following Monday's general election, the UNP won 106 seats, which whilst placing it in lead position, failed to provide it with a simple majority. The third largest party, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), which won 16, has pledged it would not join the government until the Tamil people's issues had been addressed.
The SLFP Central Committee's decision to join the UNP led government, has led to internal backlash from within the SLFP led coalition, the UPFA. See more here.
