Navy plans acquisition of 18 acres in Mandaitivu

The Sri Lankan navy plans to acquire a further 18 acres of land in J/07 Grama Sevaha Division, Mandaitivu in order to build a camp for the Velusumana Navy Division.

A notice declaring the planned acquisition was seen by residents on the island.

The navy has been occupying land on the island since 1990, leaving families perpetually displaced and unable to return to their homes.

The island has seen a number of murders and abductions over the decades, which residents believe were perpetrated by navy personnel.
