5th day of Thileepan hunger strike remembered in Jaffna and Batticaloa

Marking the fifth day of Lt. Col. Thileepan's hunger strike 31 years ago today, remembrance events were held in Jaffna and Batticaloa.

A genocide awareness event was held in Vakaneri, Batticaloa, following on from yesterday's event in Kiraan.

Residents condemned the genocide of Tamils by the Sri Lankan state.

In Nallur at the Thileepan memorial, a flower garland was placed by the Tamil Nadu artist, Dr Puhazhenthi, who paid tribute to his sacrifice.

Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) members for the Chavakchcheri Divisional Secretariat also took part in the commemorations.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
