Former Nazi guard charged with French massacre

A former Nazi guard has been charged with participation in a massacre in Nazi-occupied France, the Guardian reports.

The 88-year-old former SS guard faces possible war crimes charges for the murder of 25 people and complicity in the killing of hundreds more in the village of Oradour-sur-Glane in 1944.

A total of 642 villagers, including 254 women and 207 children, were rounded up and massacred in relatiation for the alleged kidnapping of a German officer by the French resistance.

Robert Hebras, one of six survivors, told French media:

"It's important that we find someone even if it's 70 years afterwards."

The Guardian writes "Oradour is an ambiguous symbol because it represents not just the atrocities committed by the Nazis but also a post-war failure to punish the perpetrators."
