Black July commemorated in Toronto and London

Tamil youths have led commemorations of the Black July pogroms against Tamils in 1983, with events held in Toronto and London to mark the 30th anniversary.

Members of the Tamil Youth Organisation in London held a relay over 5 days, walking past prominent Central London locations, ending on Saturday at an event in South London.

In Toronto a youth forum saw young Tamils discuss Black July and its part in the Tamil genocide.

The workshop was organised by the Canadian Tamil Youth Alliance as part of its Thazhumbakam project, and also saw an exhibition, displaying art work about the Tamil struggle.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
