Jaffna students celebrate LTTE leader Prabhakaran’s birthday

Photographs: Tamil Guardian

Students at Jaffna University cut a cake and put up posters around the campus celebrating the 61st birthday of LTTE leader Veluppillai Prabhakaran today.

A cake was cut on campus and sweets handed out to students, whilst posters celebrating the occasion were also seen. One of the posters was signed off by 4th year students at the university.

The event took place despite the Sri Lankan military presence around the campus, which has increased over the last week ahead of Maaveerar Naal, the Tamil remembrance day, tomorrow.

The LTTE leader’s birthday was also marked at events across the world today, including in Europe, North America and India.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
