North and South Korea to address escalation of violence

Negotiators from North Korea and South Korea spoke through Saturday night and into Sunday evening to ease tensions between the two nations after an exchange of artillery fire last week.

The two envoys were shown on TV exchanging handshakes at the beginning of their talk in South Korea’s Peace House reports Reuters.

The talks were centred around ways to resolve tension and improve ties between the two nations said South Korea’s presidential Blue House on Sunday.

South Korea and North-Korea have remained in a technical state of war after the 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce with no agreement.

The crisis escalated after North Korea fired four shells into South Korea, with South Korea responding with a barrage of 29 artillery rounds.

The UN, United States and North-Korea’s major ally China, have all called for a calm resolution to the escalation of violence.
