South Sudan criticises UN sanctions

The UN Security Council decision to impose sanctions on military commanders from both sides of South Sudan’s conflict could derail the peace process, said the country’s foreign ministry spokesperson.

Questioning the effectiveness sanctions, Mawien Makol Ari, said,

“For the UN to insist on sanctions, I think is not going to be a helpful thing. This country doesn’t need sanctions. What this country needs is support from the region, from the international community so that we come up with a peaceful solution, as soon as possible, to alleviate the suffering of the people of South Sudan.”

Travel bans and asset freezes on Six South Sudanese military commanders where imposed by the UN Security Council on Wednesday.

Fighting continues in the region, with the UN expressing concern that displaced civilians amy face a cholera outbreak.
