The South African government must arrest Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir, London-based advocacy group Tamils Against Genocide (TAG), demanded.
In a statement released on Sunday, the group pointed out the International Criminal Court had issued two arrest warrants against the president for charges including crimes against humanity and genocide.
Al-Bashir on Sunday was prevented from leaving South Africa, in anticipation of a ruling for his arrest by The Southern Africa Litigation Centre (SALC).
“TAG welcomes the interim ruling of the High Court in Pretoria, preventing Al-Bashir from leaving South Africa, pending its ruling on an application for his arrest by The Southern Africa Litigation Centre (SALC),
“South Africa has been looked upon as a role model for Transitional Justice. It must continue to engage with the ICC and meet its international obligations,” TAG said in their statement.
“Regardless of further rulings by the South African High Court, the government of South Africa must immediately arrest Al-Bashir so that he may face trial for Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide in Darfur,
“The Republic of South Africa as an ICC Member is under international obligation to immediately arrest Al-Bashir and transfer him to the Hague. Further, South Africa has acceded to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide (1948). South Africa must set a positive example to the rest of the world in taking action to prevent and punish genocide,” the statement said.
