The British prime minister, David Cameron, discussed progress on reconciliation with the Sri Lankan prime minister, Ranil Wickremasinghe on Monday, as he congratulated Mr Cameron on his electoral victory.
In tweet this morning, Number 10 said: "PM congratulated by PM Wickremesinghe of Sri Lanka on election. Discussed progress on reconciliation & agreed to build bilateral relations."
Last month, Mr Cameron reiterated his call on the new Sri Lankan government to offer its full support for the ongoing UN inquiry into mass atrocities against Tamils committed at the final stages of the armed conflict in a message marking Tamil and Sinhala new year. See more here.
"When I met with President Sirisena in Downing Street last month I offered my support for the steps his government has begun to take to address the issues of the past. But I was also clear that the Government must go further and that they must continue to offer full support to the ongoing UN investigation," he had said.
